Generic sampler. The Flagstaff list is the specific cousin.

Generic free sampler for any downtown. It teaches a word or two on purpose: keystone, dentil, transom, quoin. You do not need to remember them after. You need to have looked. Item 1 is the street sign on the corner you start from.

Easy. One line asks a person who works on the block. The rest are the building.

The list

25 lines

Photo proof for every line. Item 1 says where you were.

  1. 1The street sign on the corner you’re starting from.
  2. 2Look up. A second floor fancier than the first floor.
  3. 3A date carved, cast, or painted into a building.
  4. 4A ghost sign. Old paint on brick. Or the most faded sign here.
  5. 5Two different bricks where a building got added onto.
  6. 6A column, a pillar, or a post holding something up.
  7. 7An arch. The wedge at the very top is the keystone.
  8. 8Decoration under a roof edge. Little square blocks are dentils.
  9. 9A transom, the window above a door.
  10. 10A window or a door that got bricked up.
  11. 11A fire escape.
  12. 12Carved stone, terra cotta, or molded trim.
  13. 13Tile set into a shop doorway.
  14. 14The best door on the street.
  15. 15A roofline shape you never see on new buildings.
  16. 16Colored or patterned glass.
  17. 17A corner where the stones stack differently. Those are quoins.
  18. 18The ugliest modern thing bolted onto an old building.
  19. 19A sign that sticks out over the sidewalk.
  20. 20A utility cover. Read what it says out loud.
  21. 21Something stamped into the sidewalk or the curb.
  22. 22The oldest-looking building on the block.
  23. 23A new building touching an old one.
  24. 24Ask someone who works on this block how old their building is.
  25. 25The tallest thing you can see from where you stand.

Questions about this hunt

Do we have to be in a specific city?

No. Downtown is an Anywhere sampler. It is written for the kind of place, not one address. If you want a list for a real spot we have played, start in the hunt library.

What is item 1?

The sign. Every list starts with a photo that says where you were, so the recap has a beginning.
